Pandawa beach, the hidden gems of Bali

a secret way to Pandawa Beach between the limestones

Most of us know of the usual places beaches like Dreamland or Kuta Beach, but another more beautiful yet less heard of beach exists, by the name of Pandawa. Pandawa is located in the village of Kutuh in Southern Bali, about 1 hour from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Pandawa beach is ‘Hidden’ behind large carved limestone cliffs that reveal wide views to the Indian Ocean, was once also dubbed as ‘Secret Beach’.

Pandawa Beach is also known for its impressive terrain and manmade limestone features that serve as a one-of-a-kind welcome into this coastal area. There are six white stone statues draped in colourful Balinese waistcloths, namely Dewi Kunti, the mother figure from the epic, and the five heroes: Dharmawangsa (also known by the name Yudhistira), Bima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadewa. These are the Panca Pandawa, five brothers who are characters in the shadow puppet theater, from which the beach takes its name. Huge cliffs were cut through to make way for its winding and smooth asphalt roads which lead down to the beach.

The water at Pandawa Beach, as with most of Bali’s southern coastline, is an exotic combination of blue and green, as local seaweed farmers still tend to their patches along these coasts. On clear days with mild winds, it is a great place to swim, or you can hire a sea kayak, don some life vests and paddle out for fun, and even grab a surfboard to catch a wave beyond the reef breaks. There are no coast guards on duty in this area, so be careful when swimming or canoeing as the condition of the sea can be unpredictable. Don’t feel like going in the water? Simply sit on the beach beneath the trees or at one of the beach stalls and enjoy a fresh coconut with a snack of roasted corn.

Pandawa Beach is also the site for the Hindu “Melasti” ceremony practiced by the Balinese community, aside from the usual beach activities. Melasti ceremony is usually held each year around March, in conjunction with the Hindu Balinese New year, Nyepi day. The ceremony takes place three days before Nyepi and represents the cleansing and purification of mind and soul. This is a rather spectacular parade and worthy experience, should you be visiting Bali at the right time of year.
