Ubud, the romantic art city of Bali

Ubud is the place to be if you’re looking for peace and quiet. Ubud is located 35 km northeast of Bali's International Airport and is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali in Ubud District, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. Ubud was just a small village, but now it has grown into a thriving yet laid back cosmopolitan community. Ubud is popular in part today because it is the best place in Bali to break out of the tourist mode and get off the beaten path, although far from undiscovered.

A walk through the lush paddy fields, watching colourful processions of women gracefully balancing piles of fruit offerings on their way to the temple, are lasting impressions and simply breathtaking. The Ubud area is around two- to three hundred meters above sea level and surrounded by rice fields, which makes it noticeably cooler than then other tourist destinations in Bali. Neighbouring villages are well known for unique bamboo crafts and furniture, wood- and stone carving and many other crafts. On the South of Ubud. You can find hundreds of craft shops offering art products and handmade souvenirs, especially made of stone or wood.

Ubud is the perfect place to enjoy cultural events and performances. Ubud is also home to good restaurants, cafes and streets of shops, many selling goods from the region's artisans. Ubud is also the vivacious center of Bali’s arts scene, home to a small treasure trove of museums and galleries.  Art galleries are also  abundant in Ubud.

Ubud is also famous for it's regularly nightly traditional dance performances, which are part of the traditional culture and are arranged for tourists on a regular schedule. Hindu-Balinese ceremonies take place on a nearly daily basis, especially in the European summer, which is the driest and coolest season here. The Kecak, Legong and Barong dances are performed weekly as are the classical Ramayana and Mahabharata dance-dramas, gamelan recitals (orchestra comprising traditional musical instruments) and the wayang kulit (traditional Indonesian leather puppets)  performances .

Ubud offers several natural retreats, The lush, green views and cool atmosphere makes morning and afternoon strolls most pleasant. You can visit the temples and villages that have remained relatively unchanged through the years.

all types of accommodation can be easily found Ubud, and many accommodations in Ubud are also somewhat more reasonably priced than in the beach towns of Bali.   Modest accommodation or even homestays are available for those who would prefer to watch Balinese daily life up close. But atmosphere is perhaps the major attractions. If Kuta is madness, Sanur is sterile, and Nusa Dua is culturally isolated, then Ubud is the place to go. Many tourists simply base their entire stay in the city and travel to other destinations from Ubud.

The village cluster of Ubud is the ideal place to try a famed Balinese massage and soak up the ambiance of one of Asia’s top spa destinations. Acupressure, reflexology, stretching and aromatherapy star in the island's distinctively firm massage treatments. Monkey around at nearby nature reserve Monkey Forest Park, home to hundreds of mischievous long-tailed macaques. Don’t miss the valley of tomb cloisters at Gunung Kawi.

Ubud is where famed Elizabeth Gilbert found peace and her love as written in her best selling memoir “Eat, Pray, Love”, which is now made into a film featuring Julia Roberts.
